above

I thought it was love,
Yes, I thought love to be
That which pumped through my heart
So constantly.
Beating, beating,
Never ceasing,
Somewhere deep inside of me.

I longed to fathom
What love could be,
Yet it was something that I could not see,
Trapped so tempting underneath.

So I tried to open up my skin,
O'er branching veins a layer thin-
Enter in,
Enter in.

I just wanted to know
What love looked like,
But as crimson dotted the delicate white,
I saw I was filled with something not quite
What I had dreamed it to be.
And the blood did flow,
And my soul did cry,
As from flesh my heart was free.

So the inside of me met the world all around,
But lingered the sound,
"Is this love?
Where is love?"
Does in vain my heart pound?
Maybe love isn't found
Within or around
But above.

absense of light

They say darkness is just the absence of light,
But if the dark is only that-
An absence, an emptiness,
Why does it feel so heavy inside me?

the words i wrote

Each angry stroke of pen on page
Each line of poetry, my rage;
The words I wrote were all for you,
These words that you will never view.

Each memory we shared, each time
We sang and we forgot the lines.
Now we've forgotten more it seems,
The lines of all our hopes and dreams.

Because love is messy, love is hard
When trust is broken, skin is scarred.
And now I don't know where to go
Knowing that you cannot follow.

broken

You were a part of me,
And now that part is so broken.

a sweeter song

A sonnet for English class :)

I am the floor beneath the dancer's feet,
The shining, vast expanse under her toes
Where melody and sweetest motion meet-
I'll be the stem so you can be the rose.

I'll hold you up and watch you from below,
Your beauty as you twirl and spin and soar.
The greatest gift that I could e'er bestow,
Each precious step you take to give support.

For anywhere you go I won't be far-
A firm foundation never leaves you 'lone.
If you choreographed your way into the stars,
I'd compose a sweeter song to bring you home.

So rest your weary feet on solid ground,
And dance where trust and faithfulness are found.

tension

Here I am,
Stretched out like a guitar string,
And you are the player.
You twist each tuner
Tighter and tighter,
Carefully turning each knob
Until rings out
The perfect pitch,
Pleasing to your ear.
My tone rises higher
With the strain.
Rapid vibrations
As you strike me,
Controlling each movement.

Here I am,
Suspended above every fret
In increasing tension-
The instrument that you use
To write your sad songs.
I yearn to be free,
But what song can I sing
Without the striking of my strings?
How can I be anything
Without you, my heart-
My tormentor.
Without you is the most empty silence,
And I might almost prefer the pain.
Each chord I play
Is tuned perfectly
To the sound of your malevolence.

Here I am,
Pulled taut across the neck,
Stiff and spiteful,
And held in your hands.
At the mercy of your fingers,
I play your music.
Oh my heart, your beat
Is the rhythm of my vibrations,
But why does your beat
Feel like a beating?
I am stretched so tight
To be what you like.
You told me that music was freedom,
But your song is hate,
And it pulls me so tight that I might break.
You're something that I can't escape.

whatever is true

A song based on Philippians 4:4-8

Whatever is true
Whatever is noble
Whatever is right
Whatever is pure
Whatever is lovely
Whatever's admirable
If anything
Is excellent or praiseworthy
Think about such things

Rejoice in the Lord always
I will say it again rejoice
Do not be anxious
What I'm saying is
The Lord is good
And He hears my voice

Each situation
Prayer and petition
With thanksgiving present all your requests
To God above

And whatever is true
Whatever is noble
Whatever is right
Whatever is pure
Whatever is lovely
Whatever's admirable
If anything
Is excellent or praiseworthy
Think about such things

And the God of peace
Will be with you
Whatever is true

Rejoice in the Lord always
I will say it again, rejoice
Ain't got no worries
Though there's storms all around me
Your peace it comes
Drowns out the noise

Yeah, Your perfect peace
Passes understanding
And it'll guard my heart and mind
In Jesus Christ

So I will turn my mind
Away from all the lies
And to the holy one, the perfect love
Who casts out all my fear
And then I hear

Whatever is true
Whatever is noble
Whatever is right
Whatever is pure
Whatever is lovely
Whatever's admirable
If anything
Is excellent or praiseworthy
Think about such things

And the God of peace
Will be with you
Whatever is true

new life

Inspired by Psalm 98:8 and Psalm 104:32

You touched the mountains
And they smoked.
You touched my heart
And gave it hope.
The fiery red
Came bursting through,
When with new life
I sang to You.

It was Your breath
Set stars aglow.
You brought the rain,
Caused me to grow.
Made forests, oceans,
Skies above.
You breathed out life,
I breathed in love.

The rivers clapped
Their hands in awe,
When icy hearts
Your love did thaw.
You saved me from
The depths below-
Praise God from Whom
All blessings flow!
